Nursing home falls very often cause severe and painful disabilities, functional declines and a reduced quality of life. After a fall with injuries, those who were used to being somewhat independent can find themselves relying on others for much of their care, or are unable to do the same activities they once could do, leaving them depressed and isolated.
The CDC estimates that about 1.4 million people reside in nursing homes. That number is expected to exponentially increase as the “baby boomer” generation ages. The CDC has published a projection that the number of Americans over age 65 is projected to double from 40.2 million in 2010 to 88.5 million in 2050. It is critical that care, caution and fall prevention be used, as the CDC reports that falls occur more in nursing home patients than among elderly citizens living in the community.
Cases often involve failure to recognize fall risks or to properly plan for high risk of falling. Many times, simple safety precautions are ignored or known environmental hazards are present and not corrected. The use of medications causing sleepiness or cognitive problems, inadequate maintenance, low numbers of staff to assist in mobility and transfer, and failure to train on how to prevent falls, all can play a part in falls, drops and fractures.
